RiverMeadow dancing for joy thanks to $12M funding from Cisco, Violin Memory

It’s been a wild year for San Jose-based RiverMeadow Software. The startup, which helps clients migrate data from their servers into the cloud and manage that data once it’s there, named a new CEO, replacing the founder whose name is now notably absent from the management roster. It raised $5 million in equity and moved its HQ from Massachusetts to Silicon Valley. And, it lost COO/CTO Scott Metzger in a plane crash.

On Tuesday, RiverMeadow will announce decidedly cheerier news: It’s closed a $12 million Series B from Cisco Systems and Violin Memory. The full text of the announcement is below, but by way of subtext, the Violin piece of this is interesting. Metzger had worked at the flash memory maker, as has SVP of operations Rich Heaton. And investors in last summer’s funding round included Violin CEO Don Basile and former chairman Mark Rosenblatt.

Violin is keeping busy on other fronts, announcing last week its long-anticipated IPO filing and plans to move from Mountain View to Santa Clara.

RiverMeadow Software Closes $12 Million in Series B

San Jose, Calif., September 4 – RiverMeadow Software Inc., developer of the world’s only automated server migration solution developed specifically for carrier and service provider clouds, has closed a $12 million Series B financing round including Cisco, Violin Memory and others. The new funding will continue to fuel RiverMeadow’s growth as it drives deployments of the RiverMeadow Cloud Migration SaaS with carriers and service providers on a global scale.

“This is a significant milestone for RiverMeadow which validates the enormous potential we see for our cloud migration solution,” said Mark Shirman, CEO, RiverMeadow. “The RiverMeadow Cloud Migration SaaS has already gained tremendous traction and acceptance with many of the world’s largest cloud infrastructure manufacturers and service providers. This latest funding round will allow us to continue to scale the company for future growth by expanding our engineering team and supporting our OEM’s in meeting the growing market demands for cloud migration.”

In April, RiverMeadow announced that Cisco will use the RiverMeadow Cloud Migration SaaS tool in its Cloud On-Boarding Service offerings to help customers easily move entire server workloads to public, private and hybrid cloud environments. By reducing the cost, timeframe and complexity of cloud migration, the solution enables Cisco to quickly, easily and cost-efficiently deliver the benefits of cloud computing to their customers.

The RiverMeadow Cloud Migration SaaS automates the migration of live physical, virtual and cloud-based servers “as-is” into public, private and hybrid cloud environments. Developed from the ground up to accommodate the most comprehensive range of server-to-cloud migrations, the RiverMeadow Cloud Migration SaaS automates the cloud migration process from beginning-to-end, without the need to install agents or quiesce servers.
